uMsunduzi Museum

The uMsunduzi Museum (formerly the Voortrekker Museum) is located in the heart of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, a city renowned for its tourist attractions and nationally significant cultural and sporting events. Established in 1912 to commemorate the Voortrekkers following Impi yaseNcome/Battle of Blood River on 16 December 1838 between the Voortrekkers and amaZulu, the Museum also manages the Ncome Museum, a legacy project of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. Opened in 1999, the Ncome Museum is situated on the historic battlefield site.

Following South Africa's democratic transition in 1994, the Museum was renamed uMsunduzi Museum and adopted a more inclusive and representative approach to South Africa's diverse histories and cultures. This transformation expanded its focus beyond research, collections and exhibitions to include education and outreach programmes that reflect the heritage of all South African communities.

In keeping with this inclusive vision, the Ncome Museum serves not only as a memorial to Impi yaseNcome/Battle of Blood River but also as a repository of the histories, narratives and heritage of the communities that shaped the region, particularly the amaZulu, BaSotho and Afrikaners.
