Overview
The National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) is a statutory body established in terms of the Marketing of Agricultural Products (MAP) Act 47 of 1996, reporting to the Minister of Agriculture. Its mandate is to act as an independent advisory body, providing strategic advice to the Minister and stakeholders on matters relating to agricultural marketing, policy development, and the application of regulatory and statutory measures.
The NAMC’s mission is to provide agricultural marketing advisory services to key stakeholders in support of a vibrant, inclusive and competitive agricultural marketing system in South Africa. Guided by the MAP Act, the Council’s strategic objectives are to: increase market access for all market participants; promote the efficiency of the marketing of agricultural products; optimise export earnings from agricultural products; and enhance the viability and sustainability of the agricultural sector.
To fulfil its mandate, the NAMC delivers its services through three core divisions, namely; Agribusiness Development, Agricultural Regulatory Measures and the Markets and Economic Research Centre (MERC). The Council implements its mandate through a range of integrated initiatives, including: conducting research and economic analysis on trade, markets and agricultural value chains; linking farmers to markets, with a strong focus on smallholder and emerging producers; monitoring food prices, input costs and market trends to inform policy and stakeholders; supporting development schemes and partnerships to strengthen smallholder agriculture, including technical assistance and capacity-building programmes; managing and overseeing agricultural industry trusts to support transformation and sector development; facilitating communication and coordination between industry stakeholders and government; and administering and advising on statutory measures, including investigating applications, monitoring compliance and recommending regulatory actions to the Minister.
Through these functions, the NAMC plays a central role in enhancing market efficiency, promoting inclusive participation, and ensuring that agricultural markets operate fairly and effectively, contributing to economic growth, food security and rural development in South Africa.
